Today was definitely one of those days that I'm thankful that this quote has stuck with me for so long!
The teen is staying with me all week and I was scheduled to work two of the week days. When she lived with me before, my mom picked up the girls and brought her to school and the little one to day care. This time, I have decided not to ask for her assistance (or my dad's or sister's) unless I absolutely have to. So, on the days I had to work, she would have to get up earlier than she used to when she lived here and get dropped off at school an hour before classes start. I let her know this before she "agreed" to stay here, but would really like to make this week as easy as possible for her (with hopes this isn't the only time she stays with me!)
So, I opted to try and get today off work. We haven't had that many patients and when I left last night, I thought it would be pretty "sure thing" that I'd get the day off. Then, I got a 5:00 AM phone call that I would be "on call". This isn't as great as being "off", but it did mean I could sleep in a bit longer and so could the teen.
However, the "sleeping in" was cut short by a phone call at 6:55 AM saying that I needed to come to work at least until 1:00 since the charge nurse had meetings. So, I quickly showered and got ready for work, dropping the teen off at school before getting to work about 7:35 (great perk of living close!) The teen had a ride home in case I needed to stay...and I let her know that I probably would choose to stay if I could so then I could try to get Wednesday off (and not completely run out of PTO).
I showed up to work and did get my patients from yesterday. Unfortunately, the co-worker in my area was really crabby when I got there (seriously, I'm the one who just got called in at 7:00 in the morning!) Then, the charge nurse's meetings were done by 9:30 (seriously, I got called in for 2 1/2 hours?!), so someone was going to have to go home (you know, for "budget" reasons). If I went home, I'd still be "on call" and risk being called back in if they got busy...yeah, that didn't sound like fun even though I definitely had stuff I could do at home in the mean time.
So, I decided to stay and actually had a pretty busy day. I managed to pretty much "steer clear" of my crabby co-worker (she also did get less crabby as the day went on, thank goodness!)
As annoying as all this was, I'm thankful for this "blessed are the flexible" motto and that I was able to demonstrate to my co-workers how to appropriately react when things don't go as planned (at least I hope I was a good role model of that ;) )
I haven't seen the teen since I got home from work, but she did save a bowl of macaroni and cheese for me :) (I let her know on the way to school that I didn't expect her to cook dinner and she didn't have to wait for me, but I wasn't sure what she'd do!) I think she has some tests/quizzes tomorrow, so she's been studying. I doubt she'll let me quiz her, but I did offer.
I already have tomorrow off (and a laundry list of things I NEED to make myself do!) and will try again on Wednesday to get the full day off (as long as we get to sleep in, I'll be cool with it and try again on Saturday ;) )
Good night.
