28 Great years

Of course, there were times it didn't seem that great, but my life, for the most part, has been "great". I have learned a lot in my 28 years, especially during my past four working with chronically ill children and their families. Some of these families take each day with their child as a gift; transplant is often a choice they make to possibly give their child a "normal" life. I won't pretend to be like that, but do try and remember that I have been VERY blessed in my life. I have awesome parents, a terrific family, a job I love that pays my bills and allows me to have some fun too, good friends...and so much more. Sure, I spend more time reading blogs than I do praying. I definitely take more naps than I probably should. I eat too much, don't exercise enough. I have made choices in my life that gave me great experiences, but left me with less money...most of the time I do not regret that because those choices led me to so much more. I'm a year older, a year more experienced, a year closer to 30...I'm pretty sure only God knows what is in store for me this next year because I have no idea what my plans are.

Flowers from my friend in Pennsylvania...so nice!!
(and very unexpected!)

I told my Grandma that I had nothing "Catholic" in my house.
She and my Grandpa got me this print of The Last Supper.
They also decided that when they can no longer have their Statue of Mary, she is mine. I almost cried (and, we decided that that won't happen for quite a while!).

28 ounces of Margarita for my 28th Birthday (I'm sure I gained SO much weight today! Out to lunch, out to dinner, over a pint of ice cream...wow!)

"Trick" and "Treat" wine from my sister and brother-in-law.
My parents gave me a very nice card, money, a cute t-shirt, dinner, dessert, and my LIFE of course!

First Hockey Game

On Friday, I attended my first hockey game. I was invited by the mom of one of the transplant patients who also had to receive chemo-like drugs for her PTLD. I have baby-sat her a few times and she is a riot! She was invited to the game because a couple cancer patients were chosen for some special events this weekend. I got to go out to the ice with her when she shot her puck so I could take pictures. It was SO fun! She did not want to leave the ice and it was hilarious! I actually saw about half of the 9 goals that were scored (I hear that's a lot for hockey...it was a college game). Her mom decided that we should attend another game and actually watch it. Sounds like a fun plan to me :o)
I didn't know it was a "pink out" for Breast Cancer
or I would have worn pink.

She wore pink, but this is her favorite outfit.

Once when I was baby-sitting, she decided to

wear it to the park.

"Because, then people will tell me I'm cute."

Ok, that works (and is SO true)!

Shooting her puck (she had to go first...

and last!)

After the game.

We had a lot of fun!

Looks like it is going to be a Red Sox versus Rockies World Series. I'll have to decide if I want to stick with "my Red Sox" or root for the "Cinderella Story". I do have a couple of days! Tomorrow's my big TWO-EIGHT, so I should go to bed soon if I want to feel like I've "slept in" since I have a rather busy day scheduled.

The cookies were a hit with the nurses on my floor today. I found someone to deliver some to the transplant team tomorrow (otherwise, knowing me, I would have gone in on my birthday to deliver them myself rather than wait until Tuesday!)

Mission Accomplished!

I will have to post about my first hockey game another time (I went last night and it was a lot of fun!). I also will talk about the flowers I got for my birthday--so nice!

But, today was a bit slow at work. Not bad, and much appreciated since I hadn't worked since Wednesday and being up out of bed for 13 hours wasn't something I'd done in a while! The new thing we are doing at work is that we are supposed to bring treats for our birthday like in elementary school. I'm not sure if anyone else has done this, but I'm all for that! Baking snickerdoodles is my "specialty". I haven't done it in a while so was a little out-of-practice, but that's what I wanted to do. Unfortunately, I am working the two days before and two days after my birthday, so unless I wanted to bake on my birthday, I had to do it tonight. I got home around 8:30 and "puttered around" for a little bit before making my double batch of dough. I started rolling the cookies at about 9:15 and took my last batch (85 cookies total...I counted) out at 10:22 which happens to be my favorite time (since my birth date is 10/22, of course!). They look a tiny bit different than how I remember them being last time, but I did taste two (about to have my third) and they taste good to me :o) Now, I'll have to decide how to "divvy" them up.

Well, now that I know the ALCS is going to game 7, I can go to bed...GO RED SOX!!

The countdown is on...my birthday is the day after tomorrow :o)

The Gift of Life

I found this story on another blog and wanted to share it. It is an inspiring story of the gift of life. Beware, Kleenex necessary. Working with transplant patients is pretty much what I do. I have not yet worked with a donor since I doing work in Intensive Care, so it is interesting/sad to see "the other side".

Also, this is my FIRST TIME to put a link in my blog (and I THINK I did it twice!). I'm not sure if I'll remember how to do it the next time since it took me a good twenty minutes or so and I don't even know if it will work!

Change of Plans

So, I got a 5:30 AM call from the PICU charge nurse telling me that I am not needed today. Unfortunately, one of the sickest patients passed away last night, so they did not need as many nurses and they were able to get float nurse help. I am very sad about that child losing his battle...he was such a sweet baby with a SUPER nice mom...I guess that's what happens when you work with very sick kids, but it doesn't make it any easier. I'm also a little annoyed because when I volunteered to work extra, I specifically asked if they would try and find float help or if they were going to use me no matter what. They assured me that I would count into their staffing and would not be cancelled. I have a call into my manager to hopefully clear that up. Of course, it isn't ALL bad...I didn't get up until 9:45, I got to work out for the third time this week (much needed!), it is raining AGAIN so I can probably curl up with a book, take a nap, or scrapbook. My mom is coming home today, so I can see her (I hear my dad is making his "famous" tuna casserole!). Of course, it kind of messed up my "plan" and now I don't get that extra money, but I guess money isn't everything!

Maybe more later...gosh, I'm starting to blog A LOT...kind of funny since I also have a regular journal too :o)

Oh what fun...

Today's shift definitely had it's ups and not quite up there... I started off with two patients and sent one home before I got to have an early, mostly uninterrupted lunch (oh so rare in my world!). Right before that happened, a mother brought her child up to the floor to visit me. It was SO sweet! She said that she had come a couple times before when I was not working. Her baby was 7 months old when he received part of her liver. He is now 14 months old and adorable as ever! I actually only took care of him 2 or 3 times, but really connected with this family (at least, it seems that way to me since they did go out of their way to try and visit me!). This little boy let me pick him up and snuggled with me, giving me hugs...oh my gosh, it was priceless! For a 14 month old to be like that to a "stranger" is just amazing (maybe he remembers me from "way back when " so I'm not a stranger any more!). They are moving to another state, so that could have been my last visit, but I DID give the mom my address, so hopefully I'll get a Christmas card :o)

After lunch was when it all began to get crazy. One of my patients actually had two different student nurses, which, we all have to learn, but sometimes students are more work. This patient is quite the pistol to put it mildly and doesn't really like new people (she is 10 going on like 13 or 15 or 20). So, she wouldn't let the students do some of her cares, so I had to, but she didn't really want me either...argh! I got an admission around 3:00. It was "just" respiratory distress, but no English is spoken in that household, so it took a little bit of extra time. That patient was assigned a nursing student as he was getting admitted...okay, that is SO not cool! Luckily, she was a nice student who actually held MY hand as I started one of the few IVs I have attempted in my 5 years as a nurse (sad, but true). It only took one poke and I was pretty proud of that! Of course, he didn't get his first respiratory treatment until my shift was over...oops, kind of forgot about that being the reason he was admitted (**I WAS monitoring him and he was in no danger, but still not quite the way it should have been). In the meantime, the charge nurse started admitting another patient (reminder, I now only have two patients, since one went home). It figured that it would be my patient but that fact didn't really set in until she had done most of the work and was like "so, are ya going to assess him and do the charting?" Uh, yeah, I'll get right on that. After all that, I did manage to clock out at the "normal" time (oh, 7:40).

So, tomorrow I decided to work a "bonus shift" in the PICU...if I feel any complaints coming on, I suppose I'm going to have to keep reminding myself "this was your choice; this is your fault; you brought this on yourself; you need the money; this is not that bad" Oh my, here's hoping it isn't THAT bad. I actually know what patients I would like, but they will probably get a float nurse too, so I'll probably have to take different ones (or, I could get lucky and get who I want!).

Well, it could be a busy day tomorrow, so I better get some sleep. That's all for tonight folks (ha ha like anyone is reading!)

Good friends everywhere

This morning I made it to Curves for what was, I believe, only my fourth workout in two months. Not only has my body been missing out physically, but emotionally too. I have been missing my social time, my time to talk about what is going on in my life. There, I find myself able to talk freely without judgement (or very little anyway!). The people there have heard about MOST of my issues and talking has helped me through them. I have been blessed with a great group of women, many of whom, I am embarrased to say, I do not know their names. Since I work out in the morning (not the early morning!), the majority of those there are either stay-at-home moms or retired women...both good groups to get advice from :o)

Today, I worked out with a woman I had not seen for a while (obviously, I've hardly been there to see ANYONE!). She has a high-schooler and a kid in junior high. We've had coffee a couple of times, and I baby-sat her kids for a few days about a year ago. She asked if I wanted to get coffee today after our work-out--for "fifteen minutes". I had a couple hours before I worked, so said sure. We ended up visiting for nearly an hour about all sorts of stuff. I actually told her things that I'm not sure I've told anyone...worries, fears, plans, ideas, goals, issues, etc. that I've been holding inside. I think they have been wanting to get out for a while but didn't know who to tell, or what exactly was going on inside. I am pretty sure I feel a lot better without such a heavy weight inside. She listened very well and basically made me feel like I am not crazy. She did, however, help me to realize that some things will just happen and I need to be ready. Wow, this seems pretty vague, and it is, but I am feeling better and that's what matters. I did listen a little bit to her, but did a lot of talking!

How grateful I am to have such good friends! I have many of these types of friends...friends I talk to a couple of times a year but we get back into "the groove" quickly and I am changed by every encounter. This is a great reminder for me, because I spent the rest of the afternoon "bored" (since I haven't felt like scrapbooking, didn't feel like reading, and definitely not wanting to clean!). It's "Biggest Loser Night", so I'm going to go get dessert with a friend...I know, I'm terrible!

One good thing about no one really reading my blog but me is that I don't get crazy nasty comments. I canNOT believe the things people are willing to write on other people's blogs! Today, somebody wrote on a blog I read of a chronically ill child. They wrote asking why her parents are putting her through so much, why they would take her to the best hospital that can care for her that is miles away from the rest of her family, why not just "let her go"...this was so hurtful for ME to read...I can't imagine what her parents felt. Luckily, they have proven to be very strong people and will not let the comments of one stranger affect their hope and faith.

Anyway, I better get ready for dessert!

Family photos

Well, I'm still thinking about my "issues" and am
not sure what to post about today.
I was looking to see what pictures I could add
and found photos from my mom's birthday
that was at the end of August.
She is out-of-town right now, so maybe
this will make me miss her less :o)
I did talk to her on the phone twice today and have
been hanging out with my dad--
going to the horse races and watching baseball!!
(he doesn't like being a "bachelor")

My birthday is next week...I guess I need to decide
where we should eat (maybe somewhere
with healthy food...or not!)

Stormy weather

It has been raining almost non-stop for three days now. I love thunderstorms and the sound of rain beating down, but this is crazy! Luckily, it didn't rain that hard during the breast cancer walk. It was amazing how many people were there supporting this cause. The theme of the walk was "Hope starts with me" and you could definitely feel the hope in the air. It only took us about 45 minutes to walk the route, so I'm pretty sure it was closer to a 5K than a 5 mile, so I had no trouble (although, I'm a little tired and it's not even 7:30, so it definitely took some effort). We took a school bus (22 of us from Curves) on the 60 mile drive to the walk, so it was a fun time even with the weather.

When I got home, I found out that a patient I took care of yesterday got really sick overnight. I just started bawling! It made me question everything that happened...did I miss something? Should I have asked for more tests? Should I have had someone else do another assessment? This child has been through so much and her family is amazing...why did this happen to her again? I guess my only consolation is that I believe that I worked with the mother yesterday in doing some "problem solving". She knew something wasn't right and I agreed with her. We went down her list of symptoms multiple times. I asked her multiple times what she thought we should do, what she wanted me to do. I just cried and cried (of course, I was also watching some ice skating thing on TV that was talking about people with cancer, songs about kids with cancer, hearing my favorite song from "Wicked"...I was already a mess of emotions!). I am praying SO hard for this child and her family. She needs to get better and go back home soon.

After my meltdown, I showered, then went to the horse races (simulcast) with my dad. This is something fun that we do together, but hadn't done in a while. My mom is out-of-town, so it was a great time. Of course, we lost every race we bet (usually we win at least one!). We didn't even come close!!

But, now I'm home in time to watch the baseball game. I'm sad that the Red Sox ended up losing last night. Tonight, I think I'll root for the Rockies (if I can stay up late enough to watch the whole game...taking a long walk, pouring rain, and crying wiped me of all my energy!)

Tomorrow, my supervised visit is at Chuck E. Cheese...so it can't be THAT bad of a day!

Great day

Well, pretty good anyway (I WAS working!). I decided to take whatever patient assignment was given to me, but told myself all through my shower this morning that I was NOT going to say anything about what happened earlier this year if I had that particular patient. For whatever reason, I'm not sure why, I felt the need to say something RIGHT before it was time to leave. If I could have waited TEN more minutes, I could have saved myself SO much embarrassment! It was so ridiculous, after having such a good day with that patient (even though I did have issues with my anxious/nervous hives once or twice that seem to come even when I'm not feeling like things are that bad!) that I decided to open my big mouth and a can of worms that had become a "non-issue". I'm thinking she didn't even remember what had happened, or so much has happened since then that it didn't matter anymore. I'm very frustruated with myself, but hopefully was able to "smooth things over" and adequately explained myself. The mom just gave me a "what the ****" are you talking about?! kind of look (although, not really because she is a Christian woman who is not the swearing type, so probably more of a "what is wrong with you?" kind of look).

So, overall it was a good day. All my patients had nice parents (who actually were there all day with their children...that doesn't happen very often!), no one was too terribly sick (although patient mentioned above required some extra monitoring and was still "questionable" when I left). I don't work at the hospital again until Wednesday...I think I can handle that!

Tomorrow I am doing a breast cancer walk. It is five miles and I'm hoping my fat a** will be able to do that (hard to believe I ran a 10K in April!). It's also supposed to be cool and rainy...fabulous!

At this time, the RED SOX have taken the lead...go Boston! :o) (That's the "New Englander" in me talking!).

Well, I'm sufficiently tired and ready to go watch the game from the comfort of my bed.

Off Early!!!

I started off my shift with two patients (normal is 2-3, with the understanding that if you start with two, you will most likely get at least one admission). The other 2 nurses in my area started with 3. The plan was for me to get the scheduled admission (obviously!). We each ended up sending a patient home and as of 4:00 we hadn't heard anything about the admission. So, I was sitting there with one patient, the others with two, and the charge nurse decided that someone needed to go home, and that someone should be me because I just had one patient. I jumped at that idea because I had been "dragging" since 2:00 after being off for a few days. So, I gave report on my one patient and got home by 5! Of course, I had BIG PLANS of taking a nap, but didn't.

I did, however, talk to my friend who moved away. One of the patients she did a lot with while she was here passed away yesterday in a different state. It was really sad to hear of her passing because she was a child who had come SO far and had a lot of potential...she seemed like one of the ones who would gain so much life after receiving her transplant. My heart goes out to her family.

I pray a lot for the families of the patients I care for. They deal with so many more issues all at once than some people ever have to deal with. Today I sent a card to a mom who lost her daughter in January. Her daughter's birthday is next week. The majority of the blogs I read are those of parents who either have chronically ill children, or have children who have died. (Is there something wrong with me?!). I actually think the answer to that is "no"...hopefully anyway...I think these people have all been sent to me to teach me, to help me care for those other people God has chosen to place in my life.

This past week or so, I have been a little anxious about going to work. Usually, we "pick" our patients before the shift starts. Some nurses get there extra early so they have first dibbs...I'm not sure if that's "right", but it's the truth, and I will admit that I've done it once or twice, but mostly I'd rather have my sleep. We have a patient whose mom had, I'm not sure how to explain it, some kind of "freak out" issue with me earlier this year even though I've never had her child as a patient. I'm pretty sure it was a huge misunderstanding because this mom seems like a very sweet and kind person with a huge heart (someone kinda like me!). Anyway, I'm not sure if I should "shy away" from taking this patient, if I should "choose" to take this patient and risk the mother being very upset about that, or just let what happens happen and deal with whatever comes. I have another opportunity tomorrow...I guess I'll sleep on it (and pray some too!).

Well, a post about getting off early and am thinking about work...that pretty much is how my life goes. I have issues...but am not going to change my position that I love living alone!

I love fall!

I think Fall has always been my favorite time of the year. When I was younger, it probably was just because that is when my birthday comes. Now, I love the cooler weather (it is MUCH easier to hide the extra weight I'm carrying with sweaters/sweatshirts/jackets and jeans than tank tops and shorts!) and all the beauty that comes with the changing season. I wish it would just stay fall and the snow would stay away, but that's how it goes here! I have been sleeping with my bedroom window open and this morning I think it was less than 40 degrees outside when I woke up (the 10-day forecast has lows in the 40s/50s and highs in the 60s--perfect!!)! Oh how hard it was to get out of bed! Luckily, today was a "fun work day"! One of our "family things" is working at a local Pumpkin Patch each October. I used to work quite a bit (before I had "real jobs"), but this year am only working three times. Today was one of those days. So, I was outside in the fresh autumn air for six hours. Lots of school groups come during the day and it is so fun seeing the kids have such a great time. It also isn't nearly as crazy busy as it is on the weekends, so you can actually enjoy each person you see, instead of being rushed from one customer to the next.

My "pumpkin patch job" as my family calls it, will (hopefully) pay for my new habit of getting my nails done every two weeks (I know, acrylics are supposedly "illegal" in nursing, but I haven't gotten "talked to" yet!). I got them for my sister's wedding and they look MUCH nicer than my normal chewed off ones! I probably won't keep them forever, but maybe through the holidays at least.

Well, this post was supposed to be about why I like fall. I got a bit off-topic and don't know how to get back there. I love fall clothes, I love having a fall birthday, I love the cooler weather. I'm not sure I'm going to love raking the millions of leaves that will fall from my huge trees at my house...

Back to the hospital tomorrow...I haven't been there since Monday, so have no idea what it will be like. We had some high acuity patients on the floor on Monday, but maybe they will be better by tomorrow.

Mommy ready?

I'm not quite sure. Maybe that means "no". I'm turning 28 in fifteen days. I guess that doesn't automatically qualify me as a "yes". I've thought about being a foster mom at least since I was thirteen. For the past couple of years, I have thought about it more seriously. Of course, I was working at least two jobs and am currently working three, so some things would definitely have to change. At one of my jobs, I am working closely with someone who is a foster parent (and someone whose child is in foster care). I got this job while I was waiting to get paperwork to do respite care through the state. I put the paperwork away since I didn't have time any more. However, last week I went and got fingerprinted...step one done. I think I'll turn in the rest of the paperwork this week...just because...or "just in case". I wonder if I'm more lonely than I think I am...or am just sad because I'm almost 28 and could be a mom by now...somehow I'm not thinking a child will solve those problems!

I baby-sat this weekend, but sometimes did feel more like a "mom" than a fun baby-sitter. Not sure if that is a "sign" or just makes me more confused. I'm pretty tired after "playing mom" for 48 hours, so I guess I'll just be thankful for lots of sleep while I can get it!

This is not my baby (obviously),

but he sure is a cute one!

And, I DO know him :o)

Not a "PICU" nurse

but today I did my best! It was my turn to float, but luckily for me it was to PICU instead of to one of the adult units! It was, however, quite the busy day! Yesterday I was crazy busy running two hallways with my three patients, all three of them having "issues" at the same time...I was SO ready to go home and slept GREAT! Today, I "just" had one patient, but I was in that room nearly ALL DAY LONG! I do not know how I could have handled another patient, even though all the other nurses had two patients (they were VERY nice to me!). I gave two infusions that required vital signs every 15 minutes for over an hour plus multiple other infusions all while monitoring a fever, low blood pressures, high heart rate, high respiratory rate, junky sounding lungs...I SO don't quite know what to do with that sick of kids and think I MAY have spent extra time in the room just because I was scared of what could happen if I left! I do think that it was a good experience for me. It is good to see "the other side". I probably worked just as hard yesterday and I did today, just "differently". It shouldn't be my "turn" to float for a while, which is good, but I'm even happier that I don't even have to go back to the hospital until Monday! I think I'll enjoy my time off, even though I do have "plans"...maybe I'll blog about them!

On a completely different note, I'm hooked on "The Biggest Loser" for the first time this year. Now I know why my sister always cried when she watched it because now I cry too. I'm thinking it isn't that good that I like to watch it while I eat ice cream, drink beer, or eat microwave popcorn (or something equally as healthy!). I think that may defeat the purpose of the show, but I guess I have my own "issues".

Well, I may have a chance to sleep in for the first time in a few days, but need to go to bed soon to do that.

Not much going on

I worked today and it was SO hard to get up after 2 days off work AND it felt SO nice in bed with my bedroom window open since the day started off pretty cool. I reluctantly got out of bed, and luckily had left-overs to bring for lunch. My patients kept me busy for a little while (mostly annoying "busy work" I had to do because for some reason the residents caring for one of my patients didn't want to do the work that other residents usually do for us...maybe we've been "spoiled"). It all turned out fine and, now that the shift is over, I can say that I was pretty bored for an hour or so. But, now that I'm thinking about that, I should have been doing the required education tests that are due sometime in October. Hopefully tomorrow will be a "nice" day and I can work on those! Tomorrow night is a party at one of the transplant docs houses. Last year there was pretty amazing food AND an open bar...looking forward to it, even though I have to go after working a 12-hr shift (I'll be ready for a drink, that's for sure!)

I finally talked to my aunt tonight for the first time since her surgery. She is doing okay...having some discomfort and forcing herself to take it easy and rest. She goes back to the doctor on Monday and I guess will find out then if she needs chemo.

While I'm posting "random" stuff, this is a photo of me, a couple friends, and "our "server at Village Inn. He "hooks us up" with some great stuff! Last time, I ordered the "Two Egg Breakfast"-substitute toast for the pancakes and fruit for the eggs, keep the hash browns-and it didn't phase him one bit (we also got a free slice of triple chocolate pie to share...that I am just SURE my body needed!).

Okay, that's a bit of randomness for this evening. I started a new book, so maybe I'll read some of that before going to sleep (I should get some extra rest so I can make it through the day AND the night!)

Happy Mercy Day!

I took today and tomorrow off work so I could attend activities at my "Alma Mater", a Mercy High School. I'm really big on traditions (probably because I was raised Catholic and had the opportunity to attend a school whose foundation is also tradition). One of the traditions I love to celebrate is Mercy Day. Even when I was away at college and when I lived on the East Coast, I remembered this day and celebrated it as I could. The actual "Mercy Day" is tomorrow, but I'm writing about it tonight in case I get busy tomorrow.

Today we had an all-school "reunion" Mass and Brunch and tomorrow is Mass and a play put on by the seniors. I am looking forward to that because each year the class portrays the story of Catherine McAuley in their own unique way. None of the plays are the same. Maybe I'll get a picture or two to post tomorrow (not that it REALLY matters because I'm the only one who reads my blog!)

Here is a little history about the day:
September 24, 1827
Feast of our Lady of Mercy: the House on Baggot Street opens as a school for poor young girls and a residence for homeless girls and women. Anna Maria Doyle and Catherine Byrn move in and begin works of mercy.
On the 24th of September every year, 11,000 Sisters of Mercy and their friends and colleagues around the world celebrate Mercy Day. This is the day on which
Catherine McAuley first opened the House of Mercy in Baggot Street, Dublin, Ireland and dedicated it to Our Lady of Mercy.

Tired and crabby

I guess I saw that coming, after my last post about how much I was going to be working and anticipating the tiredness.
I didn't, however, anticipate that a patient who has "lived" with us for nearly four years
would lose his battle this weekend.
I think I am still in shock, even though he came close to death SO many times before.
I've been too tired to talk to his parents, or to his sisters who have spent many days with me and my family.
I feel REALLY bad about that.
I have barely shed a tear...that isn't like me at all.

Today I was really crabby at work.
I felt it inside, and am hoping it didn't show.
All of the patients I had today have the odds against them
to make it to age two.

That is my job.
I love my job.
Even though sometimes
my job sucks.

This is not a great picture,
but it was easy to find
(and I wasn't in the mood to search).
He actually was pretty sick here too.
(it was Christmas)
Prayers for his family and friends...I know he is in Heaven and at Peace.
On a better note, my aunt is home after her surgery...still praying for no chemo!

Has it been THAT long?!

Wow, I can hardly believe it's been that long since I posted. I ACTUALLY had TEN days off for my sister's wedding (I think she took about that many!). I worked two crazy shifts, then was off for another 5 days. I flew to be with my aunt for four days as she prepares for surgery (double masectomy) this coming Monday. She is in good spirits and has some really good friends (and an awesome husband!) who will be there to help her. It is hard that her family all live hundreds of miles away, but great to know that she is not alone. We are all praying that she has a quick recovery with no chemo needed.

So, I'm back at home and in the middle of working 5 out of 6 days (that doesn't sound TOO bad, but it could be considering they are 12-hour shifts). The one day I don't work (Monday), I have a class, an appointment, am working my other job, and have a party to attend. Nice "day off"! Oh well, at least my first two shifts have gone well even though I had to change my patient assignment because no one else was chemo certified. I was pretty bummed not having my cute girls from yesterday, but had a pretty quiet day today so should not complain!

Well, we are still sorting through the thousands of photos from my sister's wedding. So, I thought I could post a few more just so there is "someone" looking at them and they are serving some kind of purpose!

My tallest cousin, my one cousin who is shorter than me, and grandparents.

The happy couple

Just me and my two 13-year old cousins...

I'm older than the two of them put together!

Sleeping on the couch...again!

Yes, for the second night in a row, I will be sleeping on my couch. I don't think this is "supposed" to happen when you live by yourself! However, my bed is so piled with stuff, there is no way I could sleep in it...I suppose I could (?should!) dump it back on the floor where it came from, but I REALLY want to do it right! I got new windows yesterday, so need to vacuum and would LOVE to get rid of some junk. My guest bed is still not re-made after I washed the sheets from the weekend...oh well, at least I have a comfy couch! So, what did I do today that prevented me from at least clearing off my bed?! Oh, probably posting a blog entry, searching the net for random things...but, I will have to say that I did work for two hours, went running (probably close to a mile), bought groceries, new pillows, and a new outside garbage can. I also helped my parents clean their house for the gathering they will have on Friday for the newlyweds to open their gifts. That sounds MUCH better than saying that I sat on my couch all day doing nothing so I can sleep on it again...I'll stick with that story. Tomorrow, though, I HAVE to clean off my bed because something tells me it would be hard making it through a 12-hour shift after 10 days off and three nights on a couch!

Busy Busy!

I can hardly believe I haven't posted in nearly 2 weeks! It has been pretty busy even though I haven't worked in over a week (gotta love 12-hour shifts! 3 days vacation for 10 days off!). My sister got married on Saturday, so last week was spent doing some preparation for that. I helped make a slide show that turned out very nice, but did take quite a bit of time. I'm glad I'm off all week to "recover" from all the fun :o)

Yep, that's my sister the bride! It was very "non-traditional", but perfectly my sister!

Mimosas were my drink of choice for the evening ...I had to have had at least eight!

The wedding party...the white looked SO cool with the blue!
